Citizen of the Year nominations!DEADLINE FOR NOMINATION IS JANUARY 18, 2008. The Havana Chamber of Commerce annually presents its Citizen of the Year award to an Individual recognized for outstanding service and achievements within the Community of Havana. Letters of nomination should be sent to the Havana Area Chamber of Commerce at P.O.Box 116, Havana, IL 62644 or dropped at the office of the Mason County Democrat, and should describe why the person deserves the honor. Max Thompson was our 2006 honoree.

 

February:

Havana's Eagle Day FestivalGather along Havana’s beautiful Riverfront Park and point your binoculars skyward, as early morning mists part to reveal majestic birds perched above the river, searching the water’s surface for any sign of fish. Visit our Eagle Days Festival the first Saturday in February. Go to Dickson Mounds and enjoy a Raptor show and backyard birding activities.
Havana Super SaturdayCome to New Central Elementary in Havana from 9am-1pm on the second Saturday in February to learn about community services Havana has to offer familes and children. Youth can enjoy several activities in the school gym, including a "bungee run". Admission is free.
Eagle Days FestivalHavana's Eagle Days Festival is always the first Saturday in February, and offers unique live looks at eagles at Riverfront park. Because of its unique position on the Illinois River, bounded by the Chautauqua National Wildlife Refuge and Emiquon, the Havana area has become an increasingly popular eagle wintering ground. Go to Dickson Mounds and enjoy a Raptor show and backyard birding activities.

 

May:

Spring CarnivalHavana's Spring Carnival, sponsored by the Havana Fire Department, is held the second weekend in May. The carnival features various amusements and food. This event is a major fundraiser for the Havana Fire Department.

 

June:

Havana All-Town Garage and Sidewalk SaleThe Havana All-Town Sidewalk and Garage Sale and Antique, Arts and Crafts Fair, sponsored by the Havana Chamber of Commerce, is held the first Saturday in June. Sales will be held at participating residences and downtown. Downtown merchants will be holding special sales during this event. This event is held rain or shine.
Havana Park District Brown Bag It SeriesEntertainers perform every Friday in June from 11:30am-1:00pm at the Riverfront Stage at Havana's Riverfront Park. Entertainment will return in September at the Riverfront Park Stage. All brown bag it events are free to the public. In case of bad weather, the events will take place at the C.I. Chester Center, 200 S McKinley Street, Havana.

 

July:

Havana Fourth of July CelebrationThe Havana Fourth of July Celebration, hosted by the Havana Chamber of Commerce, is comprised of several events including a parade and a fireworks display which are always held on the Fourth of July. Following the parade is the Little Miss Sparkler and Little Mister Firecracker Pageant. The Havana Fire Department water fight will also take place after the parade. The fireworks will begin at dusk at the Havana High School football field, located at the corner of McKinley Avenue and Highway 97. This event is free to the public. Seating for the fireworks is available in the bleachers or on the practice field.

 

August:

Riverfront Car Show and CruiseRiverfront Car Show and Cruise at Riverfront Park Starts on August 10, 2007 Ends on August 11, 2007 Two Day Event The cruise-in starts at 6pm on August 10, with a live band performing from 7-11pm. A boat parade will begin after dark. The car show will be August 11. Saturday's activities will include an Antique Tractor Show and Antique Tractor Pull. Pre-registrations are accepted and cost $15, registrations the day of the show will cost $20

 

September:

Polka Pace RaceThe Polka Pace Race is a 5K run through the streets of Havana, including a jaunt through our scenic Riverfront Park and down our historic brick streets. The race is part of the annual Oktoberfest Celebration and is held the first Saturday after Labor Day, at 8 am. To download a race form, click the link below.
OktoberfestOktoberfest, sponsored by the Havana Chamber of Commerce, is held the Friday and Saturday after Labor Day. Activities include German bands, arts and crafts, a parade, and of course, bratwurst, sauerkraut, beer, wine, and other foods. Join us also for the 5K Polka Pace Race at 8 am Saturday morning for a nice run down our brick streets and along our Riverfront Park.

 

November:

Christmas ParadeA Child's Magical Christmas Parade, held the Saturday after Thanksgiving, begins at 10 am in downtown Havana. Children can meet with Santa at the Santa House on the Main Street side of the courthouse square.
Courtyard of LightsThe Mason County Courtyard of Lights ceremony will begin at 7:00pm the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The Muddy River Brass Band will be on hand at 6:30pm to play traditional Christmas music and the program will include a sing-along. The holiday display includes a Christmas Tree Lane, comprised of trees donated by local organizations as well as the Remembrance Tree, where individuals have the opportunity to honor loved ones by placing ornaments on the tree.
All-Town Open HouseMany Havana businesses are working together the first weekend in November to host an All-Town Open House to showcase their newest goods and services for the holiday season. The Open House will be Friday, Saturday and Sunday November 2 -4 with each participating business setting its own schedule and activities.

 

December:

Holiday Tour of HomesThe Havana Chamber of Commerces’ Holiday Tour of Homes is held on the second Sunday in December from 1 to 4 pm with four fantastic houses ready for Christmas and holiday visitors. Heritage Characters from what is called “Fragments of Havana” will provide entertainment at the Havana Public Library, which will be the main base of operations. Refreshments will also be available at the library. Those taking part in the tour will also have the option to purchase a special ticket that will allow them to ride the Chamber’s new Trolley from house to house. Tickets will be $6 per person to visit the library and four homes, or $10 per person for those who wish to ride the Trolley to visit the five sites. Tickets will be available at the Library and at each of the homes the day of the tour. Histories and unique features of the homes will be published on the tour program.
